Cinnamon buñuelos are a delicious and crunchy treat covered in sugar and cinnamon. They always remind me of the fun Christmas parties of my childhood. My grandparents prepared them every Christmas and there were always mountains of buñuelos all over the kitchen for us and to give to all of our neighbors. My grandmother prepared them with flour dough and vegetable oil, and would then divide them into dozens of little balls that she flattened out with her large wooden rolling pin, the same way she would make her tasty flour tortillas. She would then fry them in hot oil until they were perfectly golden brown and crunchy. My grandfather also liked making buñuelos, but he had a much easier method. He used premade flour tortillas from the supermarket. I loved both versions, but these days I prepare my grandfather’s version for my family. My kids like helping me cut the tortillas using cookie cutters of different shapes. Prepare them for your family this holiday season!

  • 1 tablespoon of ground cinnamon
  • 12 to 15 flour tortillas
  • 1 1/2 cups of vegetable oil (for frying)

Mix the sugar and ground cinnamon in a bowl.
  •

Using the cookie cutter, cut the tortillas into the shape of stars.
  •

Heat the vegetable oil in a large saucepan at high heat. Very carefully place 6 to 8 stars in the hot oil. Fry for 1 to 2 minutes on both sides until completely golden brown. Remove the stars from the oil and place on a plate lined with paper towels to absorb the excess oil.

Instead of cutting the tortillas into stars, you can simple fry them whole or cut them into triangles.
