Citrus Sangria with Apples

When I was little, I would run to the house on the corner where my grandmother lived. On this corner was the tailor shop of my great-grandfather–he lived behind the shop in a small room hidden behind a curtain. My cousins and I would run behind the curtain to open the refrigerator and find it full of refreshing drinks for all of us. One of my favorite treats from the fridge was sangría; it had a very special sabor, difficult to describe–sweet and refreshing. Little did I know that sangría was in fact a delicious drink made from red or white wine! Now I make it when I have a special fiesta at home; aguas frescas are preferred by the little ones and sangría is the adult guests enjoy. Very versatile in nature, this drink can be made in many ways and in various sabores. The traditional recipe is prepared with wine, citrus juice, rum or brandy, fruit and sugar. The recipe I’m sharing with you today is lighter, made only with red wine and accompanied by chopped apples to provide a slightly sweet crunch. I hope that you enjoy it as much as I do!

Ingredients

  • 4 apples
  • 1 liter grapefruit (toronja) flavored drink (or soda)
  • 2 cups lemonade
  • 1 bottle (750ml) red wine, such as cabernet, merlot or shiraz
  • 8 glasses, for serving

Directions

    First, chop the apples into small pieces and place some into each of the eight glasses. Then pour half a cup of your preferred grapefruit drink into each glass, followed by 1/4 cup of lemonade.

    Slowly, while inclining the glass, pour one-third cup of wine into the glass so that it touches the side as you’re pouring. If you do this carefully, you’ll see that the wine will remain on ‘top’ floating over the soda below, creating a two-color effect.

    Garnish with a slice of apple and you’re ready to enjoy.

Expert Tips

  • tip 1
    Store all the ingredients in the refrigerator at least the night before, so they're well chilled at the moment to prepare this drink.
  • tip 2
    Don't chop the apple until you are ready to serve the sangria. This will prevent the apple from oxidizing and changing color. If you want to leave the apple ready, dice and immediately serve into glasses followed by the lemonade and grapefruit drink. Later on you can add the wine when ready to serve.
