I would like to share with you about one of my favorite cocktails! The daiquiri is one of the world’s most popular drinks. Many people only know the frozen variation and have a limited concept of what the drink really is. The daiquiri is excellent and delectable when made correctly in its original version. Its origins begin with two American friends who worked in Cuban mines. Tired of always drinking the same gin, the miners decided to create a different drink with some of the Caribbean island’s excellent products. That’s how it got its daiquiri name, after the city where it was created, located southwest of Santiago de Cuba. The cocktail then became popular at “El Floridita” bar. It only started becoming popular internationally in the early 20th century.

Garnish with a lemon slice and twist.

Expert Tips

  • tip 1
The classic or traditional daiquiri is a bit tangy, so if you like your drinks a little sweeter increase the amount of sugar.
  • tip 2
To make a traditional daiquiri, you should use white rum, but you can also make it with your choice of rum (white, gold, aged or other). It’s a matter of preference.
  • tip 3
The traditional cocktail was served in a tall flute glass, but different types are used today, especially a martini glass. Ideally, they should be made of actual glass. Another option is to coat the rim of the glass with salt or sugar, like a margarita.
  • tip 4
The classic daiquiri, always keeping its three basic ingredients (rum, lemon or lime and sugar), has also seen a good number of variations with the addition of other fruits, whether made with their natural juice or fruit-flavored liquor: strawberry, pineapple, banana, orange, peach, and even adding a part of another liquor or drink: whiskey, champagne or maraschino, which usually makes it sweeter.
  • tip 5
You can serve it over crushed ice or put the ingredients with plenty of ice in the blender to get the frozen version. There’s also the fizz version, which combines the classic daiquiri with either fruit or powdered sugar (refined) and carbonated water. Any version is delicious and works well for any occasion.
