This deliciosa fried snack is very easy to prepare- I assure you that everyone in the family will love the results. These arañitas or spiders are a Puerto Rican invention and act as a substitute for the traditional tostones; they have a riquísimo flavor and are crunchy as well. They make the perfect accompaniment for any meal and can be served as appetizers or snacks, too. Try serving with cocktail sauce, aioli de cilantro, or just ketchup if you prefer.

Ingredients

  • 3-4 green plantains
  • Garlic salt, to taste
  • Oil for frying

Directions

  • 1
Start by peeling the plantains, then take the interior portions and grate like a piece a cheese (into strips). Season with the garlic salt as desired.
  • 2
Heat a sufficient amount of oil for frying in a skillet over medium-high heat. To prepare the arañitas, take approximately one or two tablespoons of grated plantains and smash the ‘strips’ together between your hands.
  • 3
Fry the arañitas on each side until golden brown. When ready, remove from the oil and let sit over a paper towel to remove any excess oil.

Expert Tips

  • tip 1
If you would like to avoid frying, you can bake the arañitas in the oven at 350°F for 20 minutes.
  • tip 2
As an alternative, you can use green bananas when preparing this recipe.
