Halloween is right around the corner and my kids are already thinking about their costumes. On the other hand, I’m getting ready by preparing a list of desserts, candies and other treats that I love to make for this fun and spooky celebration. In addition to Halloween, we also celebrate the Day of the Dead, as this is an important date for us. We love to make the traditional calaveras, or sugar skulls. With both of these dates as my inspiration, I created these fun desserts. The giant marshmallows are the perfect canvas to create these colorful skulls. And the cute ghosts are delicious and easy to make. Happy Halloween and happy Day of the Dead!

Ingredients

For the marshmallow skulls:

  • 6 large marshmallows
  • 1 cup Mini Trix™ cereal
  • 1 Yoplait® original vanilla yogurt
  • 1 box Betty Crocker™ Fruit Roll-Ups™ Variety Pack, Betty Crocker™ Fruit by the Foot™ Variety Pack and Betty Crocker™ Fruit Gushers™ variety pack

For the banana ghosts:

  • 2 bananas
  • 1/2 cup Chocolate Cheerios™ cereal
  • 6 oz candy melts

Directions

  •
    1
For the marshmallow skulls: (Prep time = 10 minutes and start to finish time = 45 minutes) Cover your work area with wax paper to keep the marshmallows from sticking and to help with cleaning up.
  •
    2
Insert a wooden stick into each marshmallow being careful so it doesn’t come out thru the other end. Repeat the process with all marshmallows.
  •
    3
Crush 1/4 cup of Mini-Trix™ cereals. Add a little yogurt to a shallow dish. Take one of the marshmallows, cover the top half with yogurt and then roll it in the crushed cereal. Repeat the process with all marshmallows.
  •
    4
To make the skull faces, use cereal and candies, and yogurt as your glue. Fruit Gushers™ make the perfect eyes, and Fruit by the Foot™ is great for making mouths, and you can use Fruit Roll-Ups™ to make any kind of shape.
  •
    5
For the banana ghosts: (prep and start to finish times noted above) This step should be done a day ahead or at least 8 hours in advance. Peel the banana, cut in half and then cut each half lengthwise. This way you’ll end up with 4 ghosts and each ghost will have a flat side and a curved side. Repeat with the other banana.
  •
    6
Carefully place a stick into each piece of banana. Place them on wax paper. Cover and freeze for a minimum of 8 hour but preferably over night. Cut a few pieces of Cheerios™ in half to make the eyes and mouths. Set aside.
  •
    7
Add candy melts to a microwavable glass container. Microwave at medium power in 30 second intervals. Stir the candy melts and microwave for an additional 30 seconds, if necessary. Don’t overheat candy melts as they won’t be usable.
  •
    8
Remove bananas from freezer. You should work quickly as the candy melts will harden as soon as they touch the frozen banana. Take a banana, use a knife to cover the surface in the candy melts. Place on wax paper and repeat process with remaining bananas.
  •
    9
Using candy melt as your glue, add pieces of Cheerios™ to create faces. Stick the bananas in mini paper molds.
  •
    10
Serve immediately or store in the freezer in a tightly sealed container.
  •
    11
    Happy Halloween!
